Membership and Volunteering
The Vancouver Island Human Rights Coalition is recruiting members and volunteers. We are a small non-profit society who strives to offer an anti-oppressive service for people who are facing discrimination.
If you are interested in becoming a member please contact our office for membership forms. The annual membership fee is $2 for an individual or $10 for an organization.
We assist individuals in filing a human rights complaint under the BC Human Rights Code. We educate them about their rights and the options available to them.
Many of the people who call our office are looking for other kinds of support as well, such as advocacy relating to income assistance, child protection issues or housing issues. In these cases we link individuals with resources in the community.
As a small non-profit we have limited funding and can only provide for one paid part time staff person. Luckily during the summer due to funding from the Law Foundation and Canada Summer Jobs we are able to have two paid staff people in the office. After the summer the office will be back to one paid part time staff person.
We are recruiting volunteers for the following areas:
- Board membership (participating in monthly board meetings)
- Office Administration (answering phones, emails, providing clerical support to advocate)
- Fundraising activities (grant applications)
- Events planning (planning events for VIHRC such as a concert, speaker series, or other education event in support of education surrounding human rights)
- Education campaigns (what are human rights? when can file a complaint? where can you get help? as well as anti-discrimination workshops for volunteers, board, or the broader community)
- Outreach assistance (membership and volunteer recruitment)
- Fine arts and design (pamphlets, web site, images, etc)
- Human Rights Advocacy services (educating people about their rights, assisting them in filing a complaint).
